How To Say YES When You’re Scared Shitless...

Today Tink Simplicity is oozing with I'm so freaking excited I want to jump out of my skin motivation and it's all thanks to one of my favourite gal pal bloggers Tara. Tara is this ridonkulously positive, life loving, GORGEOUS spiritual soul. Just stepping into her space you feel more alive, more confident in your ability to manifest the life of your dreams. Taras words are screaming all the way through my ear drums right now, this post is hitting my sore spot. It's about time I make  more room for that three letter word that starts with a Y and ends with an S.

You’ve been manifesting the crap out of x, y and z.  You’ve been dreaming big, reciting your affirmations, and taking baby steps along the way.  And then: KA-POW!

OR

You’re going about your daily business when suddenly an outrageously freakish opportunity presents itself, leaving you frozen and wide eyed with your heart-a-thumpin’.

OR

Something, or someone, you've wanted for so long but otherwise given up on, stops you in your tracks and says 'Here I am! What are you waiting for?!'

I was inspired to write this post as a rebuttal against the ever-popular No Train. Saying no is productive; it's conducive to getting the important stuff done and for making room energetically in our lives for whatever makes us shine. Sometimes saying no is difficult, but it's imperative- and in doing so we experience our own power. It's liberating. Kinda makes you feel as though you should high five yourself, along with a little internal dialogue that goes something like 'Guuurl, you da boss!'

How-ev-ah! Sometimes, not often, we're greeted (read: hastily stalled) by experiences that scare the pants off us. It could be a dream that's coming into fruition, or an out-of-the-blue, once in a lifetime opportunity. These moments call for one answer, and it is not no. The answer is yes (a fist-pumping, hip shaking, awkward squeal kind of yes).

Your Action Steps

1. As mentioned above, pump your fists, shake your hips and squeal awkwardly
Jump around, OMG a little, ring someone special- do whatever you have to do expend some energy. Adrenaline is running rampant right now, so burn some of it off…

…because inevitably, fear's not far behind. When your totally unwelcome alter-ego arrives…

2. Scan. Digest. Evaluate
Become the observer of the situation. Notice how excited you initially became at the prospect. Now, why did you allow fear to show up? What are you afraid of? Is this fear reasonable? Let this process be slow and organic; you're going to feel a little yucky and uncomfortable, but know one thing: discomfort = change. As fear pumps through your body, you may feel heavy, disheartened, or totally jittery, that's ok. Digest these feelings, and then allow them to dissolve.

3. If you say no, will you regret that decision in ten years?
Killer advice from Marie Forleo. It's a yes or no answer. Answer this question quickly.

4. Find Truth
Remind yourself of how short life is. Think of someone you've loved and lost and who is no longer with us. This is a huge motivating factor for me; my cousin, who is the same age as me, died last year of cancer. I promised myself I would fit her life into mine. Guess what that entails? Saying (read: emotionally screaming) yes! Yes, I'll do it! When do I start? Where do I sign? How can I help? Life is short, pancake- realise this truth and give yourself permission to radiate.

5. Breathe + Feel
Use your imagination to travel forward in time. How does it feel at the end of this road? You've said yes and taken on the project/ written the book/ accepted the proposal… What emotions can you cultivate? Let those feelings gush through your veins, with eyes closed and spidey senses tingling…

6.Trust Your Intuition
There's a reason why you were jumping around with child like anticipation the moment this opportunity forced it's way into your life. You were joyous! You were squealing! Hell, you were happy, and excited! Happiness beats fear in an arm wrestle, any day.

7. Just Say It
With confidence and sass, and divine femininity, and a beautiful big dose of eye contact, repeat after me: YES. Alternatively, you could also confidently and sassily punch the keys Y E S on your keyboard.

Atta girl. Now go get 'em.

My Day In Food...

On a average day my aim is to eat three solid meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner. Originally I started eating this way as favour to my spleen. Your spleen prefers meal regularity, that is roughly eating same size meals at the same time each day as-well as allowing 3-4 hours in between for meals to break down, digest and send your food on it's merry way.

The good news is that since quitting sugar and adding chicken to my diet, I've fallen into this rhythm naturally. Not snacking has simplified my eating. Rarely am I sitting aroung umming and ahhhing over suitable snack choices.

Eating goes like this. In each meal I want lean protein, healthy fat & bucketloads of veggies. Fibre, healing herbs & herbal teas are also essential to my daily foodie fun! I eat a lot, my appetite is huge, I don't fret about it, it's just me. This is how I eat on a typical day broken up by meal times.

Breakfast: Chinese herbs. Apple cider vinegar warm water. Two poached eggs, wilted greens- kale, silverbeet, rocket. Sweet potato/pumpkin/potato hash and a handful of mushrooms. Buckwheat & coconut pudding.Yoghurt with nuts & chia seeds.

Green tea

Lunch: Chinese herbs. Apple cider vinegar warm water. Usually a fresh take on left overs. Assorted veggie & chickpea stew on buckwheat. Veggie puff pie with a side of roast veggies & greens. Pesto veggie & walnut spelt pasta.

Peppermint tea

Dinner: Chinese herbs. Apple cider vinegar warm water. Chicken Congee. Chickpea stew on buckwheat, rice or potato. Garlic baked chicken with coconut oil roasted veggies. Tuna bake.

Peppermint tea

Lavender or chamomile tea before bed.

Occasionally I do snack. Mostly on weekends/social events or if I need a pre/post gym pick me up. When I do I go for...

Grilled haloumi
Raw balls/ chocolate nut treaties
Coconut oil
Homemade coconut butter
Protein smoothie
Handful of nuts
Avocado
Popcorn
Natural yoghurt

As you can see my approach to eating is simplistic, fuss free and wholesome. I eat whole foods. This eliminates the processed junk which mind you costs a bomb at the supermarket. Eating veggies three times a day ensures I get my daily quota and fills me up leaving little to no room for snacks or treating. I'm always satiated by days end. I put this down to eating real food. How simple is that? Check out my yummy recipe collection here.

What does a day in food look like for you? Could you add more real food to your day?

Inject Some Love Into Your Life (And Belly) This Winter...

I'm an absolute food adorer. Satisfied taste buds and a smile go hand in hand in my world. Devouring the pages of indulgent recipe books is an activity that tops my simple pleasures list. These days I draw gratification aplenty putting a healthy spin on original recipes and as it turns out I'm not the only one, here Em invites us into her family kitchen inspiring us to cook with love & appreciation.

Sri Lankan Love Cake (Gluten & Sugar Free)

As I type ‘gluten and sugar free’ next to ‘love cake’, I can almost hear the gasps of my family, but yes, it does exist. When I first made the decision to quit sugar, I have to admit the first thing I thought of was whether I would be strong enough to resist my favourite dessert, Sri Lankan love cake. This cake is one the women in my family have perfected over generations.

Currently on week 7 of the initial 8 week I Quit Sugar plan, I was thrilled I could start to integrate a little bit of sweetness back into my cuisine.  Not that I was craving sugar any longer, but it’s not easy to turn down your favourite dessert with family.  So the mission was set: how to continue to have Sri Lankan Love Cake in my life.

The first thing you should know is that there is no set Love Cake recipe, from my Nanna to my Aunties; no one has anything written down.  Over time they have all developed their own signature recipe, each one slightly different, but all amazingly delicious. The spices and sweetness of love cake not only fill me with the warmth and love of my family, or the lifetime memories we have shared, but also a reminder of my grandparents and Sri Lankan heritage.

I did some research and came up with the perfect Love Cake recipe that I could start to develop and make my own. It still isn’t as amazing as my Nanna’s or Auntie's , I’ve only had 2 years to play with it, them over 30.  My love cake had the ultimate test at Christmas time. They said: “It’s good, but it needs more pumpkin preserve”. Despite being slightly proud of myself that I passed the test, I advised them that there wasn't any pumpkin preserve in it. “Well then, it needs a little more cashews.” my Aunties kindly advised.

This is my recipe, the gluten and sugar free version:

Oven Temperature: 150oC fan forced

You'll need
4 eggs – separated
250g rice malt syrup
125g polenta
190g raw cashews (finely chopped – I used a stick blender to grind them down)
2.5 tablespoons rose water
2 tablespoons finely grated lemon rind
½ teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon cardamom
1/4cinnamon

Make it
Grease small square tin with 2 sheets of baking paper inside
Brush inner paper with melted butter
Beat the egg yolks and rice malt syrup until light and creamy
Stir in the polenta, cashews, rose water, lemon rind and spices (Have a little taste and if you feel it needs it, add additional spices or rose water)
Beat egg whites until they hold firm peaks, then fold into the mixture
Pour the mixture into prepared tin and bake until the cake is evenly golden brown on top and moist in the middle.  This usually takes about 1 – 1.5 hours

Note: If the cake starts to brown too quickly, cover the top with foil. Don’t attempt to turn out this cake.  It may not look like the prettiest thing you have baked, but I guarantee you what it lacks in appearance, it makes up for in taste.Cut the cake into small squares and lift one piece out at a time, placing it onto a serving platter

I encourage you to follow the same lead as the women in my family and play with different ingredients to make it your own. If you would like to know the original version of the recipe, tweet me. I hope you enjoy your Sri Lankan love cake as much as I love mine.

Sweetheart Don't Take A Bad Day Lying Down...

So last night I prioritised my day. I journal noted everything of importance & set a tangible list of blog goals. All was sweet, dandy even. "Tomorrow will flow effortlessly" I whispered to myself. Unfortunately hubby & I disagreed over something trivial, pre-sleep and consequently this morning I woke up feeling blah (Read: crappy, unmotivated, tired, sad). On the rare occasion I feel blah, my morning routine falters, I mope around the house, stare at tasks blankly... sometimes on a really blah day I'll question why I even bother. I wish not to gloss of these emotions because they're real and we all feel them from time to time don't we? Spritual people DO get angry. Happy people cry & positivity pimps aren't immune to negative thoughts from time to time.

Now I'm not going to bore you with all the details of our disagreement. That's not the purpose of this post. Instead let's be productive. If you're not yourself and the day isn't shaping up to your expectations. Here's my advice: Quit, temporarily. What's the use in forcing yourself to blog, write, sell, market, paint (insert creative talent of yours here) if that's the last thing you feel like doing? And when that niggling little voice pops up in your head and says Oh but your schedule, I grant you permission to tell that nagging bitch to piss off.

Don't make your bed, leave the dirty dishes on the sink, eat toast for breakfast then get in the shower, let's wash those to do's down the drain!!

Are you feeling lighter, more you again? Or are your emotions, thoughts & that nagging bitch coming back for round two? Here's the secret sweetheart: you're in control it's up to you to reclaim your power. Every time a not so positive thought pops up, you be the boss, go on tell em "out" . Or get all Ashlee Simpson on them, grab a spoon, locate the closest mirror, try singing at them  "And all I hear is ay ya ya ya ya, you're talking way too much I can't even hear me now all your noise is messing with my head. You're in my head. Get outta my head! Outta my, outta my head. Want you outta my head. Outta my, outta my head, Get outta my head! Outta my, outta my head. Want you outta my head.Outta my, outta my head That's what I said!"

Who knew you were such a rock star? If the lyrics themselves don't send the grumps packing watching yourself sing pop into a spoon in front of the mirror is bound to have you rolling on the floor in fits of laughter. Who's cranky now?

Now rockstar it's time to pull out the big guns, primp yourself, put on your Sundays prettiest and get out of your house. Ask yourself on your way out the door "what's going to make today totally amazing?" You already know the answer so go on make it happen. Today is your blank canvas, forget grey get your rainbow colours out and paint today all kinds of beautiful.

Ps: If this doesn't work contact me. I'll sing Ashlee Simpson too you:)

Do you have any tricks to stop a bad mood in it's tracks? How do you ensure you're every day is delightful? Are you in control of your emotions?

A Sugar Quitters Story...

Today I'm very happy to have Karrine from Momentary Reality sharing her I quit sugar story. Since kicking sugar to the kerb, I've been non stop blabbing on about how freaking awesome I feel to anyone who will listen. I share because I care:) When Karrine emailed me asking if she could tell her story, I thought "YEAH, lets bang this IQS drum"

A GUEST POST BY KARRINE BEASLEY (RINNIEZ)!
Who would have known that, when I set out to 'quit sugar'back in February, I would still be resisting the sweet poison now? I never believed that it would be possible for me, the junk food queen, to strip back my diet and remove all fructose from it. Looking back I can't even remember exactly what it was that drove me to give it up. I was tired alot, my skin liked to break out at inapproraite and downright annoying times, I craved sweet foods and unhealthy snacks 24/7 and my cholesterol and blood pressure were through the roof, but at the time I had no idea that quitting sugar would solve all these problems.
I guess I was just intrigued by all the blog posts popping up, screaming the benefits of the sugar free lifestyle and I wanted to be one of them, sharing an amazing and slightly unbelievable story about how I never craved chocolate anymore. So here I am, 5 months on, happier and healthier , sugar free and equipped with knowledge from a range of sources about the dangers of fructose consumption.

Who would have known that canned vegetables contain added sugar? Certainly not I and yet my sugar free journey has led me to this shocking discovery. Not one to opt for the canned variety of vegetables I had yet to examine the nutritional panel of a canned veg. However when a lack of available fresh produce finally led me to those cans I was appalled! I'll let the photos do the explaining:

This can of beetroot had ‘sugar’ as its third ingredient!

Who would have known that eating fat is good for you? When the media is constantly pushing the message to go low-fat it’s easy to get caught up, but take a step back, look at the sugar content on those 'healthy' products and then turn and walk away – fast! Fat will fill you up! If you cut back your fructose intake and up the fats and proteins, you WILL eat less. I drink full fat milk, I cook with with full fat cream, I put butter (yes, the real stuff) on my bread!
Who would have known that a sugar free breakfast is possible? Throw out your cereal, toss the flavoured yoghurt and please put that jam in the bin! I've read that breakfast is the meal that people struggle with most when it comes to quitting sugar. Not this girl, I love my breakfast foods!

So what do I eat? Eggs, eggs and more Eggs! Fried, poached, boiled or in a yummy omelette with seasonal veggies and a big handful of cheese. I might eat my eggs on a piece of whole grain toast (check the sugar content on the package - they vary greatly), with bacon/spinach/mushroom, or turn my eggs into breakfast muffins or biscuits (I cannot recommend Sarah Wilson's IQS cookbook more! The breakfast recipes are to die for!)

Who would have known that cravings are a sign of addiction? I used to crave every chocolate and lolly under the sun. Day in and day out needing my ‘fix’ wherever I could get it. Sugar is like a drug, a harmful and dangerous drug for our body that constantly forces us to want more and more. Quitting sugar stops that cycle and the longer you can go without the less you will want it.

Who would have known that I could write a post about a sugar free lifestyle? Five months ago, I would have laughed at you and popped another square of chocolate in my mouth. Today, I will tell anyone who'll listen all about the benefits of going sugar-free! I urge everybody reading to seek information about the dangers of fructose consumption! I also hope that even if you aren't ready to go cold-turkey on sugar, you will at least begin to develop an awareness of all the hidden places sugar is lurking in your diet!

Still thinking about quitting sugar? Want to bang the drum with us? What's stopping you?

Making Me Happyfull...

I don't know about you but I take great pleasure in seeing others happy. It's impossible for me to frown when met with someone with a smile stretched from ear to ear. If you ask me, happy spreads happy, it's undeniably contagious. Happiness is my drug, it's a high unlike anything else. Once happiness is obtained losing it isn't even an option. I pursue happiness on a full time basis regardless of the avenue I venture down happiness must always come along for the ride.

My trick for keeping your happy pants on? Appreciate life's little moments of happy. Truth is you can't just expect happiness to turn up knocking at your door uninvited. You need to notice it, be grateful for it then reach out and grab it. Once you've got it, hug it dearly. My favourite way to do this? Write happy lists of course. Happy lists ensure I stop & smell the roses everyday. I wrote about happy lists before here.

This is what's making me happy- full right about now...

House Hunting-Typing that sentence simultaneously sends my heart & belly a flutter. My body has been overtaken by equal parts excitement overdose and apprehension of the healthy kind. This memorable quotes has always stuck with me "The things you're most scared of  are usually the most worthwhile" and while it may not reign true in every aspect of life, thinking along these lines makes embracing fear all the more sweeter.

Resigning-Confidence is oozing from my pores, I assure you this is the last time you'll catch me working in a job that isn't 100% me or or job that doesn't fill my cup with juicy, juicy self loving (damn girl, you're amazing) satisfaction. Now this is not to say I don't enjoy where I am currently employed, it just no longer serves me. To love my life entirely, I must love, support & be proud of the creativity and message that I put out into the world. Piece by piece I lay down the foundations for self employment.

Mama Visits-What a delight it has been having my mum visiting for the past three weeks. It's very easy to forget what a wonder woman your mum is not to mention all of the selfless "picking up after" you type things that they do. So if you're reading this mama thanks for tidying up the house, washing the dishes and cooking a killer pie that can't be replicated. I'll surely miss our late night chats when you go.

New Family Addition-After months of eager anticipation, Rylan Memphis greeted our world on July 3rd. Rylan is a whole heap of cutie patootie rolled into one tightly tucked 50cm bundle. If you glance quickly you'll spot that he possesses this wise, old-man knowing face which makes you think, have you been here before?

Miessence Products-If you're not already acquainted allow me to introduce Miessence to you, the first beauty company to ever gain organic certification. Miessence as a whole is pure natural awesomeness. Since beginning my quest to cut out all the toxic crap from life I was yet to stumble upon a company that wooed me with their vision. Then Miessence found it's way into my life and boy am I smitten. I totally get their if you're going for it, go for it all approach. All their products (health, body & home) are made to organic food standards. Yep, that means you can eat your   moisturiser.Berry Radical is insanely delicious (hint: great for sugar quitters) & raging in antioxidants. Try it here! And yes this is actually food.

Bali Tripping & Planning-I totally rep team "live in this present moment" however, I also believe it's just lovely to have something special in the not so distance future to look forward to. There's nothing like an overseas trip to entice you to strive a little harder. We're jetting off for Bali & Sumatra in October and although our plans are still in early birdy stage, I can tell you this trip spells adventure.

What's making you happy full this week? What's your happy keeping ritual?

I Quit Sugar Wrap Up & Chocolate Buckwheat Pudding Recipe...

It's Friday and I'm feeling pretty damn good, proud even. Why? Today eight weeks ago I kicked sugar to the kerb. If you had of handed me the tools (read: Sarah Wilson IQS Book) & informed me of how easy this was going to be I would have quit sugar way back. I didn't necessarily think sugar quitting was going to be a colossol struggle, yet I didn't consider the option of it being such a breeze. No slip ups, no set backs, I'm sorry to brag but effortlessly it just worked.

Here I am eight weeks sober feeling dandy. So dandy in fact, my mouth wont stay shut. I'm doped up on anti-sugar pheromones on pursuit to to broadcast the sugar free message. We are (myself & said pheromones) begging you to jump on the sugar quitters bandwagon, even if only an experiment. Be certain there's nothing to lose in giving sugar the boot.Although this may sound laughable sugar quitting has been fun. I derived aplenty of enjoyment utilising my creative talents in the kitchen alone.

Many people have this misconception that going sugar free, is difficult, restrictive and oh the chocolate... how to get by without chocolate? In reality you're just cutting out the crap from your diet. Here I answer the most common questions I've been asked along the way...

What do I eat if I'm a raving chocoholic?
Make your own using cacao, cacao butter, vanilla essence & a drop of liquid stevia. Make my sugar free chocolate nut treaties. Try a big warm mug full of cacao, coconut cream & a spoonful of rice malt syrup. Oh and I just found this organic, sugar free chocolate substitute by Plamil Organics. Don't underestimate the chocolatey rich kick you get from cacao/ cacao nibs- many recipes can be adapted with  few simple ingredient swaps, promise.

What will happen if I slip up and eat a big fat piece of cake?
No biggie. Don't sweat it sweet cheeks. Drink heaps of water. Make a pot of detoxifying herbal tea like licorice root or green and move on. Tomorrow is a new sugar free day. Try to take note of how you feel afterwards, are you in control or has your sugar slip up sent you on a sugar hunt?

How will I sweeten my coffee?
I substituted sugar with Natvia (a blend of natural stevia & erythritol ) at first then slowly weaned myself off that too. Coffee with a splash of milk is surprisingly sweet enough on its own. Try it for yourself. Keep in mind Natvia is quite sweet so downsize your serving. One more thing after going sugar free your tastebuds will change and expect less.

Not fair! What do I order when I'm the only person at the table not ordering dessert?
I eat well. Quality food and large serves means generally I'm too full to consider dessert. Do try ordering entrée & main as opposed to main & dessert. Order a pot of tea/coffee & sip slowly. Opt for the cheese platter, sans fruit pastes ask for olives, crackers, bread etc instead. Alternatively order an entrée as your dessert just so you have something to nibble on. It feels odd at first (expect weird look off waiter) but it totally works.

How do I explain my sugar free ways to those who just don't get it?
Know this: You don't have to explain yourself to anybody, as long as your happy with your decision nothing else matters. In saying that us humans are curious creatures by nature. So I'd recommend choosing your words wisely. Poison, toxic, addictive, healthy, bad = massive turn off. I lightly touch on the negative side effects of sugar consumption before diving into full brag mode. When you focus on how amazing it feels you generate interest.

I'm over eating eggs, I'm craving a big soggy bowl of cereal...
Natural yoghurt with activated nuts, buckwheat, chia seeds & coconut makes for a mean breakfast. I'm yet to try The Muesli's muesli consisting of 5 nuts, 4 seeds, oats & coconut. Or try my Chocolate Coconut Buckwheat Pudding recipe below.I whipped up this simple Chocolate Coconut pudding for brekky on a whim one morning. I had left over buckwheat in the fridge and my tastebuds were hankering for a hit of sweetness.

Chocolate Coconut Buckwheat Pudding

You'll need
1/2 can of full fat coconut cream
1/2 cup of buckwheat
2 spoonfuls of raw cacao powder
1 handful of  chopped walnuts (preferably activated)
1 handful of shredded coconut/flakes
1 tbs of maca powder (optional)

Make it
Cook your buckwheat as per package instructions to desired consistency, then rinse.
In saucepan add coconut cream & raw cacao over low to medium heat, stir to combine.
Add buckwheat and shredded coconut, continue to stir, allow buckwheat to get lush with the coconut.
You may need to add more coconut cream depending on how thick you like your pudding.
Once your satisfied with the consistency of your pudding, chuck in walnuts stir to warm & serve.

Note: You can add vanilla essence, cinnamon, natvia for added sweetness of you'd like, I prefer it without.

I'd love to assist you along your sugar quitting journey, any journey to vibrant health in fact! Send any questions you may have my way. Oh & if you've already quit sugar I'd love to hear any suggestions you may have:)

Moving On...

I'm terribly excited to inform you... I'm moving!!! Wooop, at this precise moment picture me jumping up & down fist pumping because I'm totally doing it. My house is sold, papers signed, deposits accepted. By August 1st another family will be making my house their home, picking veggies from my garden, cooking in my kitchen. As I said how crazy exciting?

One sunny Sunday afternoon Nathan and I set an intention to chill out, be "homey". As we attempted to settle into a movie a restlessness circulated the room. Here it lingered, ricocheting back and fourth as we both sat there pretending all was swell. Unfortunately this sense of  restlessness wasn't new to me, nope I'd be running from said restlessness for months prior. The following was constant, resembling a little loss puppy- sans cuteness.

Intuitively we were crashing into the same wave, despite our unaware. Thankfully that smart husband of mine sure knows how to swim. He spoke up, "let's go lay outside" then as if on cue he found his voice... "we don't belong here". "THANK GOD" I yelped, jumping into his arms for an almighty embrace. Converstaion proceeded as such; I'm so bored, this place isn't me anymore, no adventure to be had. Isn't this what we wanted? Apparently not so in the car we hopped to headed in the direction of some place we'd rather be.

No actions were set in stone although deep down I knew, we both knew this chapter of our lives was nearing its end. Exactly six months to the date of moving in, our property launched and sold. The ease of the process assures me that life is unfolding according to my universal plan. Timing is spot-on, bigger, better, brighter passions are calling me.

Now is the time to nourish my dreams.

At first trouble arose when I attempted to articulate my thoughts into words, it was in New Zealand when it all began to make sense. The words strung together like lyrics to my favourite song. This place is no more my home than it is a big empty house begging for a family to thrust life upon it. I've outgrown my hometown, for me personally it lacks drive, the push & pull is absent, momentum scarce. Boredness permeates my soul. Give me action, strangers to befriend, laughter spilling out onto the streets at 2:00am even if only just to remember Yes I am vibrantly young.

Reflecting now I'm taken aback by my behaviour. Hey! I am only 22 there's donkeys years of life to be created by me. At some stage I got caught up in an argument with myself based on Simplicity. Self willingly I conjured up the ideal of what living simply entailed. Naively I assumed buying a house, job security & getting hitched was my happy, simple. It wasn't, it isn't. I believe simplicity living can not be defined by your location, the hectares in your backyard or your career at all. It's about enjoying the simple art of living.

We all have permission to spin the record our way. Your simple life may be bunking in a tin shed, mine so happens to be getting cozy in an inner city terrace.

And just so you know not one part of my being looks back over the past 6 months as a waste of time. This house has served its purpose by dishing up all that we don't want we've had to really think about what it is that we do. Even when the dull factor of monetary loss is inappropriately brought up (by strangers might I add) I search for the kindest way to remark frankly I don't give a Shit.

Consummately I'm driven by the notion of living a non traditionalist life. Constructing my own roads, going my own way. In my self navigation I'm saying hello to step one of dream effectuation. Baby this adventure is just beginning!!

Now before I go allow me to get into your head for a second or ten...

Is there a roadblock in your way?
Are you living in your ideal location?
Are you being true to your big beating heart?

Know this: It's never too late to grab that steering wheel with both hands and turn down the road less travelled!

I didn’t really know where to start this post, so thought it was best to kick it off with a quote that basically summarises my story.Health is one of those words that can mean a wide range of things, today let’s just focus on the physical aspect – fitness.

With so many messages out there and what seems like a new fitness fad coming out every week, an activity that should be simple can be turned quite quickly into one that may consume your mind with questions – Where do I start?  How much do I need to do?  Can I really look like her? Can I do this? Let me take you through these questions, reflecting on my experience.

Where do I start?

Think of what motivates you, what you love the most and whether any activities your friends, colleagues or partner do interest you.  Try and find at least one activity that gets your heart pumping and another that you find a little more relaxing (if your activities do both, then this is a bonus).  These activities could involve a walk or ride down to the shops, going to a dance class, joining a sports team, gardening, yoga… the possibilities are endless.

For me, the turning point was when I got my first full time job.   I’ve always been more of a morning person and from my previous exercise experience, running and pilates were the two activities that interested me the most.  So I bought a pilates DVD so I could do this at home and started doing regular runs (aiming for at least 30 minutes each).  Note: My runs started out as a jog and progressed into runs as my fitness progressed.

How much do I need to do?

Coming from a health degree background, I knew that the ideal was ‘30 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity at least 3 times a week’.  So I started out with three runs and two pilates sessions a week (alternating between the two).  Weekends were (and still remain) my rest days.  By no way am I saying you should follow my lead, but use the items you selected above to help you work out your initial plan.  When opportunities arose I also mixed my fitness routine up and tried other activities, like boot camp and various group fitness classes.  I definitely encourage you to do the same, you may find another activity you love doing… I did.

Can I really look like her?

In short, No.  This has taken me a long time to realise and something I need to regularly remind myself.  In our current society we are continually surrounded by a certain body stereotype, which makes it hard not to compare ourselves, but you need to stop. Now.  No one is the same and this diversity is what makes us so beautiful.  It’s not about who you look like, because there’s only one you.  It’s about being the best you can be and feeling fantastic, these two things should drive your fitness choices and routine.

Can I do this?

Yes, you can.  Here’s my story, in short -
Growing up, I was by no means sporty… in fact I was usually last to be picked on school teams.  However, my parents (especially my father) encouraged me to pursue the various activities I took interest in over my high school years – soccer, basketball, running and surfing.

Seven months after starting my first full time job and getting into a fitness routine that I felt gave me balance and helped me kick start the day, I slipped on my apartment steps (taking the last empty box down after moving in) and fractured my ankle in three places.  Not the way I imagined I would meet my neighbours.  I was told in emergency that night that I wouldn’t be able to run again.  Big mistake.  Don’t tell me I can’t do something, I’m too stubborn, or what I like to call ‘determined’.   Plates and screws were placed in my ankle and after three months on crutches and backed by a lot of support from my amazing partner, family, friends and physio, I taught myself to walk again… and a couple of months later I started to get back into running.

I needed a goal, I couldn’t just run because someone told me I couldn’t.  So I enrolled in a 4km, then 10km fun run.  I got my plates and screws taken out a year after my fracture and after getting rid of the beloved crutches a week after this surgery and a little more strength building I enrolled in a 14.2km run with my friends and used it as training for the half marathon later in the year.

I like to be aware of my surroundings, so I don’t listen to music while I run.  This made training for the half marathon mentally challenging, to say the least.  I’m a consistent runner and nailed 10km in 50 minutes … but for the half marathon I knew I would take longer, so my goal was to complete it within 2 hours.

The big day came and before I knew it I was running in the half marathon... half way and I was feeling good, three quarters of the way, not so much… My left foot was killing me, but I thought it was just a blister.   The last km was the hardest I had ever run in my life… I crossed the finish line at 2 hours and 50 seconds, I was shattered, 51 seconds over my goal.  A couple of days later I found out I fractured my foot in a couple of places and before I knew it was back on crutches for another couple of months.

Lesson learned, I’m not meant to run long distances, so what would my next goal be?  It was at this point that I decided to become a group fitness instructor.  Not only was this something I thought I could do throughout all stages of my life, but it would keep me fit, accountable and help me inspire others to achieve their goals.

I’ve been teaching for just over 2 years now (in-between my full time job) and I love it.  I love seeing people continually achieve their goals and their smiling faces and commitment help me achieve mine.  I still do pilates once to twice a week and also do a short run once a week (providing it’s not raining or below five degrees) with my husband.  I’ve also been doing one PT session a week to build my upper body and core strength (I hate weights and wouldn’t do it by myself, so having a PT who knows what will work for my body is the ideal). This may all sound like a lot of exercise, but it’s right for me at this point in my life.

For me, exercise has become more than just fitness, it’s my outlet and a bit of a hobby.  It keeps me sane and helps me put things in perspective, I feel energised and ready to tackle whatever is ahead of me.

Before I finish, I just want to let you know I am that by no means ripped or skin and bones.  I am a short curvy but healthy woman.  As mentioned at the start of my story, fitness it just one aspect of health and when we look at physical health, nutrition (what you eat) also plays another really important role.

To finish, I just want to leave you with these key fitness points:

Find what’s right for you,  make sure you enjoy it and it makes you feel good
Don’t be afraid to try new things – I can guarantee you, you will never be the first or last ‘new’ person, so don’t be scared
Keep balance, this is key.  Don’t overdo it or let it consume you.  It’s ok if you miss one or more of your exercise sessions
Set yourself achievable goals both short and long term, reward yourself (not just with chocolate) once you achieve them
Remember, you are gorgeous
Have fun J

Seriously Yummy Chicken Congee...

Congee (Jook) is a strong Qi (energy flow) and blood tonic or as my acupuncturist refers to it "liquid gold". Congee is extremely beneficial to the digestive system and bear hugs you like your nana when your unwell. Because Congee is easily digested many Asian cultures turn to it in times of illness & recovery periods. Put simply Congee is rice porridge with additional healing foods. On top of all the healthful benefits a bowl of Congee is seriously delicious comfort food! I happily eat Congee a couple of times a week.

Ingredients:

Eight Organic Chicken Wings (leave skin on)- tonifies chi, nourishes blood, aids kidney deficiency
Four- six garlic cloves- anti-viral, anti-fungal, detoxifies meat and seafood, kills worms, removes stagnant food or blood, reduces abscess
One onion
Two carrots- clears heat, detoxifies, strengthens all organs, benefits the eyes, relieves measles, lubricates the intestines
Two celery stalks- tonifies kidneys, stops bleeding, strengthens spleen and stomach
Two cups pumpkin- kills worms, resolves dampness, reduces fever, relieves pain, stabilizes hyperactive foetus, stops dysentery, benefits diabetes
One ginger cube- promotes sweating, anti-toxin, antidote for seafood poisoning
Four Bay leaves
Basmati or white long grain rice (we add 1 cup)- moistens Yin, clears heat, diuretic, reduces swelling.
Coconut oil
Salt & pepper
Water

Prep:

Rinse rice
Separate chicken wings into three bits each
Peel & chop onion and celery
Peel & finely dice garlic & ginger

To Make:

In a large pot brown chicken, onion, garlic and ginger in coconut oil.
Add rice, vegetables, bay leaves and salt & pepper
Fill the pot with water, (leaving about an inch of space from the top) and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally to prevent rice stickage.
Reduce to simmer, stirring occasionally.
Cook for two hours plus. The longer it cooks, the more "powerful" it becomes.
Remove chicken bones before serving

Feel free to add more veggies or meat, best not to over complicate the dish though!

What's your definition of comfort food? Do you utilise food as medicine?

Sunshine & Sweetness
